Governors of Northern States have rejected the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
The Federal Government scrapped the squad following days of street protests by young Nigerians angered by the extra judicial killings and human rights abuses perpetrated by men of the SARS.
But the Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum and Plateau state Governor, Simon Lalong, met with President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja on Thursday, and declared support for the SARS.
Fielding questions from State House Correspondents after the meeting, the Governor said that the police unit had been useful in the fight against insecurity in the North.
According to him, the baby should not be thrown away with the bath water, since SARS was not made up of bad elements alone but also personnel who were doing their work diligently.
While acknowledging that there are divisions in the country concerning the continued existence of the SARS, the Governor instead canvassed for the reformation of the unit to enable it to discharge its functions optimally.
