Tragedy struck on July 8 Uzairue market day in Etsako-West local government area LGA of Edo State.
This newspaper learnt that heavy rain which fell on that day killed over 10 people in the market. While trees that fell on people also left scores injured.
In a news release made available to ExpressDay, the King of the Kingdom, Alhaji Kadiri Imonikhe Omogbai, the Ogieneni of Uzairue, expressed shock ” over the unfortunate incident”.
Osumah Musa Afuosino the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) quotes the Monarch as saying that the market is over a century old and that the unfortunate incident is unprecedented
“Historically, the Jattu-Uzairue market was established over a century ago, and such occurrence has never been recorded in the history of the market. The market is a source of livelihood to my people not only in Edo North but the nation at large”, Ogieneni said.
“The King prayed to almighty Allah and our ancestors to grant the families the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss and grant the injured quick convalescence.
“He has called on the relevant authorities, mostly the Edo State Government to come and ascertain the cause and forestall any future occurrences as well as making the market to be a conducive place for businesses. Moreso, it’ll be a thing of joy to him and every Uzairuean if the market can be modernized to meet the world standard for our traders to feel safe and secure.
