The State House Clinic, Abuja is collaborating with India-based Apollo Hospital to bring relief to Nigerians suffering from cancer, kidney and heart related ailments.

Medical Director of State House Clinic, Dr. Munir Yakasai, made the disclosure in Abuja on Thursday, in an interview with State House Correspondents.

He said a team of specialized Doctors from the Delhi-based hospital is already in Abuja to offer free medical consultation on malignant cancer, end-stage heart failure and remedies as well as kidney transplant.

He said: “It is a friendly medical collaboration and this has been going on for long, for almost 6-7 years now. We noticed that a lot of patients from Nigeria have been going to India for treatment.

“Some of them are of course our patients and we noticed that among those hospitals in India, Apollo Hospital happened to be one of the best so far that we have been getting good response and feedback from and whenever we send our patient there, he/she comes back much better.”

Dr. Yakasai further said the need to understudy India’s response to national health emergencies and guarantee qualitative health care provision informed the collaboration with Apollo hospital.

Giving a history of how the collaboration started, he said: “Apollo hospital approached us some years ago, when they came and introduced their hospital to us, they delivered lectures and some of our staff were sent to India, where they spent up to six weeks receiving training free of charge.

“This is something that we truly appreciate and once in a while they come around and give us lectures and if we have any question that requires their attention, we introduce such patients and they see them here so it is a good collaboration.”

Leader of the Indian delegation, Dr. Varun Sukhija, said Apollo has the largest group of hospitals in India, with over 73, adding that their collaboration with State House Clinic is basically aimed at exchanging knowledge with Nigerian doctors.

“Our mission in Africa is always a knowledge exchange programme. We don’t want a situation whereby patients must travel to India for treatment. We are creating a path through which there will be knowledge exchange with Nigerian doctors too.

“So, we also have many Nigerian doctors through that path and we are giving them training in Apollo hospitals New Delhi. We have over 73 centers where they are being trained and when they are done, they will come and give their services to their Nigerian colleagues and can give treatment to patients locally here in Nigeria also,” he stated.

Dr Sukhija, who has visited Nigeria many times, said: “Nigeria is a great country. Whatever we are doing or we are trying to tell them, they always learn everything so many things have now started in Nigeria as well; like liver, kidney and bone marrow transplant, these are things that very soon they will start in Nigeria.

“You can see that many countries are coming to Nigeria now for local treatment. This is way beyond that change we are bringing,” he said.

Adding her voice, the representative of Apollo Information Centre in Abuja, Mrs Anita Yado, commended the Nigerian government for doing well in many facets, especially the health sector.

“You see, I tell you, the Nigerian government is doing quite well because they are doing wonderfully well. They are really working very hard. The health sector here is improving; so many hospitals have come up.

“I am in contact with many doctors as well and I am seeing that they are highly qualified doctors and this initiative from Apollo hospital can bring a lot of changes also,” she said.

Work together to improve N/Delta region, Buhari urges Ministry, NDDC officials President Muhammadu Buhari has restated the need to strengthen collaboration between the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs (MNDA) and Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) as part of government’s efforts at building a new and better Niger Delta region. President Buhari, who was represented by Minister of Transportation, Mu’azu Jaji Sambo, stated that this was imperative towards realizing government’s mission of improving the living conditions of the Niger Deltans and the Region. A statement by MNDA’s Director, Press and Public Relations, Patricia Deworitse said President Buhari was presenting a keynote address at the opening ceremony of a two-day top management retreat of the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs and Niger Delta Development Commission at the State House Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa, Abuja. He declared: “This retreat would serve as a veritable platform that will provide a unique opportunity to correct whatever irregularities had existed in the past and thereby attain an effective and prosperous working relationship that will be for the best interest of the Niger Delta region and Nation at large.” He reiterated that “the Federal Government has made huge commitment in the Niger Delta region, in furtherance with its desire to give the people a new lease of life, taking proactive steps to responding to the issues of the region, adopting and implementing more prudent policies and programmes that will bring about a better region.” While commending the efforts of the ministry at helping to reposition the NDDC to ensure it delivered on its mandate, the President stated that the implementation of the forensic audit report has commenced in phases and would soon usher in a new management and board for the NDDC. He commended the ministry for its efforts at harmonizing all developmental plans of all agencies and development partners operating in the Niger Delta region into a single integrated regional developmental plan, adding that it would provide a good strategy for the sustainable development of the Niger Delta region. Acknowledging the importance of the ongoing East-West road project to the nation’s economy, President Buhari reassured that the project would be completed before the end of the present administration. He expressed optimism that the retreat will bring about the repositioning of NDDC to work amicably with the ministry to promote team work and build better understanding between the organizations. He therefore called on all participants “to take advantage of the retreat and come up with resolutions that will galvanise both the ministry and NDDC towards breaking new frontiers in their mandate to develop the region.” Earlier in his welcome address, Honourable Minister of the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, Umana Okon Umana, declared that “the Ministry requires  collaboration and coordination among the agencies, development partners and other stakeholders to achieve its mandate of developing and transforming the region. Umana stated that the ministry will prioritize projects prosecution and payments by focusing on impactful projects in the area of security, health, education, water, roads and other sectors that will address the basic needs of the people of the area, adding: “We would set benchmarks and timelines for projects delivery. Our vision is to make a difference in the development of the region.” The minister stated that the mission of changing the narrative in the region would be realized when the NDDC and MNDA work together “in one accord and focus on the core mandate of both institutions, in the spirit of one government.” Umana commended President Muhammadu Buhari and Niger Delta stakeholders on his mission to fast track the rapid development of the Niger Delta region, by assigning specific achievable deliverables to the ministry, adding that part of reinventing the Niger Delta would require new strategies and different work approaches. The Minister of State of Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, Sharon Ikeazor, expressed gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari and the Federal Government, as well as the ministry, NDDC, all development partners and stakeholders “for their unwavering commitment and support towards up lifting the quality of life in the region.”
