Indigenes of Nkwumeato in Ihitte Uboma Local Government area of Imo State have been thrown into mourning following the death of a student, Chima Ogbenna who drowned at the Onuiyi River.

The Onuiyi River is in Nkwumeato in the Ihitte Uboma Local Government Area, and connects with Abadaba lake in Obowo local government area of Imo state.

The deceased was a student of st Augustine International Secondary school, Amainyi in Ihitte/Uboma LGA; a Senior Secondary three student scheduled to seat for the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination from April this year.

20 years old Ogbenna had followed his peers to the river to swim but got drowned in the process on Monday.

An indigene, Chibueze said the boys were engrossed in banters while swimming, and did not realize Ogbenna was in danger.

According to him, when they raised alarm for help, it was already too late as his body had been swept away by the river.

Chibueze said “This is very painful. Chima had already registered for SSCE and was scheduled to sit for it later this year. He got drowned in the morning but his copse was not seen till later in the evening after some spiritual cleansing had been carried out at the river.

When contacted, the Imo State Police spokesperson in the state, SP Orlando Ikeokwu said that the command was aware of the incident and had taken appropriate measures .
