The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has refuted the news reports that a policeman attached to Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, shot and killed a newspaper vendor, Ifeanyi Okereke, in Abuja.
The incident occurred near the Federal Secretariat on Thursday when the Speaker stopped to interact with the vendors, which he said was a routine as he knew many of them.
In a statement sent to journalists on Friday, ASP Mariam Yusuf, Public Relations Officer, FCT Command, clarified that the security agent was not a police operative.
“Contrary to the misleading information, preliminary investigation into the unfortunate incident reveals that the security aide who shot at the vendor is not a member of the Nigeria Police Force.”
Yusuf added that the Commissioner of Police in FCT, Bala Ciroma has ordered an investigation into the incident.
The spokesperson commiserated with family and friends of the deceased but did not state whether the security aide had been arrested or not.
