Operatives of the Imo State Police command have arrested six persons for allegedly stealing a five year-old boy, Godday Obi, says the State Police spokesman, Orlando Ikeokwu.
According to him, a tip-off led to the arrest of 39 years old Nkechi Iroegbu, and other members of the syndicate at their various hideouts.
The State Commissioner of Police, Olaniyi Fafowaro had upon assumption of office, declared zero tolerance for human trafficking even as he charged all the tactical heads of the command to unravel all cases of child stealing and trafficking in the state.
Ikeokwu said the command had on January 12, received a report of a stolen child,one Godday Obi, 5 years old, at Umuejechi, in Nekede, Owerri West local government area of Imo state.
Further, he said immediately, the “command’s Anti- kidnapping unit swung into action and upon credible information, arrested one Nkechi Iroegbu, 39 years and a native of Akoli Imenyi, Bende LGA, Abia state. She confessed to the crime and led the Police to other gang members”.
The others are Chukwudi Ndukwe; Edu Akpan of No.102 Elelenwo street Port Harcourt, Rivers State; Chinwendu Uzonwu, living at Oba in Anambra state; 50 years old Chinyeaka Gregory of number 11Boundary Road Umungasi Aba; Chidinma Ekwundu from Awka in Anambra state; and Eucharia Onwuduba, of 31 Aniekwe street, Fegge Onitsha, Anambra state, who have all confessed to their level of involvement.
Already, investigation is ongoing, while the suspects will be charged to court soon.
