The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, has set up a panel to investigate the circumstance that led to the killing of one Mr. Ifeanyi Arunsi, by a police officer at Ebem Ohafia, in Abia state.
The investigative panel which is headed by Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Anthony Michael Ogbizi, in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) is mandated to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the unfortunate incident.
It would be recalled that the alleged unprofessional conduct and misuse of firearms by a policeman led to the killing of one Mr. Ifeanyi Arunsi, at Ebem Ohafia area of Abia State on Friday, April 17, 2020.
This led the residents of the area to resort to self-help, which resulted to arson and damage to government property and operational assets of the Nigeria Police Force.
The IGP has however, condemned the action of the both the police and the residents of the area.
A statement signed by the Force Spokesman, Frank Mba, explained that: “The Panel will review police actions and inactions prior, during and after the death of Mr. Ifeanyi Arunsi and the circumstances surrounding the attack on the police station and damage to property.
“In a related development, the IGP has ordered the immediate deployment of CP Janet Agbede as the new Commissioner of Police, Abia State.
“She takes over from CP Okon Ene who has been redeployed to the Force Headquarters, Abuja.”
He, however, condoled the family and friends of the Late Ifeanyi Arunsi, and enjoined the residents of Ebem Ohafia in Abia State not to take the laws into their own hands but rather allow the course of justice to prevail at all times.
The IGP, therefore, assured that investigation into the case would be swift and thorough and that justice would surely be done to all parties.
