The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has strongly condemned the looting of warehouses and vandalization of public and private properties by hoodlums and vandals in Abuja.
In a press statement released in Abuja Wednesday, jointly signed by Emmanuel Ogbeche and Ochiaka Ugwu, Chairman and Secretary of Council respectively, the Council described the actions as unnecessary and reprehensible.
The NUJ leadership lamented how a peaceful protest suddenly turned violent when it was hijacked by hoodlums and other malicious individuals.
According to the statement, “Council is alarmed at the worrying increase in reports of hoodlums masquerading as protesters targeting warehouses and vandalising public and private properties.
“It is regrettable that a protest aimed at addressing alleged police brutality and extra-judicial murders has become a nightmare to law abiding and peaceful loving citizens.
“We support the call by the FCT administration to an end to this unfortunate development and the arrest of those culpable in the economic sabotage.”
The NUJ charged the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to explore means to address youth concerns in Abuja, while appealing to all interests to follow lawful means in addressing their grievances.
