The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nasarawa Command, has paraded a 27- year- old man, Ahmadu Yaro, for allegedly defiling a three-month-old girl and three other babies at Adogi village of Lafia.
One of the babies was said to have undergone multiple surgeries at the time the suspect was arrested at his residence on June 22, about 2:30 a.m., based on intelligence reports.
During the parade in Lafia, the State Commandant of the NSCDC, Mr Muhammad Mahmoud-Fari, represented by Bisi Olugboyega, Deputy Commandant of the Corps, said that the suspect had confessed to have defiled the three-months-old Rukaiya, whom he stole from the mother on the night of May 27 while she was sleeping.
“The suspect committed the act in an uncompleted building opposite Government Secondary School, Adogi.
“While he was at it, he heard the sound of motorcycle approaching and had to abandon the baby and fled the village. He was eventually arrested on June 22, at about 2:30.a.m in his house in Adogi.
“The suspect, during interrogation, confessed to defiling three other babies in the area, ranging from 3 months to one year six months. The parents of the other victims have also been identified and are here with us”, Olugboyega said.
He assures the public that the suspect would be prosecuted to serve as deterrent to others; urged Nigerians, especially parents, to be vigilant and expose rapists in their neighbourhood, stressing that “their action is not only destroying the lives of the victims but also indecent to the society.”
While responding to questions from journalists, the suspect confessed to the crime but pleaded for forgiveness and attributed his actions to “powers” beyond his control.
He denied that his action was for ritual purpose, adding that he had no accomplice.
The parents of the victims, who were at NSCDC State Command, appealed for justice for their children.
Aliyu Hashimu, father of Rukaiya, wants the suspect to be prosecuted for the damage done to his daughter.
Maimuna Aliyu, mother of the victim, said the baby had already undergone two surgeries and would be going in for the third one at the Jos University Teaching Hospital in the next two weeks.
