Nigeria now has 12 confirmed cases of the Coronavirus, with Lagos State government announcing four new confirmations this Thursday.

Director-General of the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, announced this to state House correspondents after attending a meeting of the National Economic Council, chaired by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo.

He advised Nigerians to continue the practice of social distancing, regular washing of hands and use of sanitisers to check further spread of the disease.

He enjoined the press to help government avert and contain the spread of fake news about the disease

Ihekweazu also commended the First Lady, Aisha Buhari, for encouraging her daughter, who just returned from UK, to be on self-isolation.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, had earlier explained in Lagos that the four persons who tested positive for the disease today were contacts of the five cases that were confirmed on Wednesday.

“What we have is a combination of imported cases and local transmission”, he said.

The new cases include a Nigerian female who returned from France via a Turkish Airlines (TK 1830) on March 14; a Nigerian in his 50s who did not travel out of the country, and another Nigerian male who arrived in the country on March 13, from Frankfurt, Germany on Luftansa flight LH 568.

Over 1,300 persons in relation to the confirmed cases are already being traced.

Meanwhile, the index case, an Italian man who arrived Nigeria about three weeks ago, has recovered, tested negative and now discharged.
