The National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT), has formally inaugurates its Performance Management System (PMS) Champions.

PMS Champions are individuals within an organization who are selected and trained to drive the implementation and success of a PMS. They act as advocates, facilitators, and points of contact for their respective departments or units, promoting the new system, providing support, and ensuring consistent application of the PMS framework.

Speaking while inaugurating the PMS Champions, the Director General of NICRAT, Prof. Usman Malami Aliyu, charged the Champions to consider their selection a privileged and a call for serve, noting that it calls for commitment, diligence, and the ability to inspire others to embrace accountability and quality in their work.

While expressing confidence that each of the Champions will rise to the challenge and deliver beyond expectations, Prof. Malami who was represented by the Director, Clinical Services, Prof. Musa Ali-Gombe, explained that PMS is not just a set of procedures but that: “It is a structured approach to ensure that every department and individual contribution is aligned without overall institutional goals.

“Through this system, we are able to measure progress, identify gaps, improve efficiency, and remain steadfast in delivering on our mandate to advance cancer research, prevention, and treatment in Nigeria.

“Today, we are officially recognizing the individuals who will serve as our PMS Champions, the key facilitators who will drive this process within their respective units. Your responsibilities will include ensuring timely and accurate reporting, promoting a culture of performance excellence, bridging communication between your unit and the PMS team, and championing the continuous improvement agenda within NICRAT.”

The PMS is a Federal Government initiative designed to improve efficiency, accountability, and service delivery across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). It provides a structured process for setting goals, tracking performance, evaluating results, and taking corrective actions to ensure that government resources are used effectively, transparently, judiciously and that public institutions don’t have room for failure and therefore, deliver on their mandates.

PMS ensures that the work of every department, unit, and individual is aligned with the government’s strategic plans, policies, and priorities. It establishes clear performance expectations, measures progress objectively, and promotes transparency in how results are achieved.

One major objective of the PMS is to align the goals and activities of a particular government agency   with national development priorities and sectoral strategies.
