The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on Tuesday said it has issued notices of intention to commence enforcement action against seven electricity distribution companies over their failure to comply with the Order 197/2020 on capping of unmetered R2 and C1 electricity customers.
The Commission in a post on its official Twitter handle listed the affected electricity distribution companies to include Benin, Enugu, Eko, Ikeja, Kano, Kaduna and Port Harcourt.
NERC in the post disclosed that the DisCos have 14 days beginning from June 4, 2020, to explain why the Commission should not sanction them over their alleged non-compliance.
NERC earlier this year published the Capping of Estimated Billing Order with effect from February 20, 2020, in response to DisCos failure to provide meters to their consumers.
The DisCos have billed customers through the controversial Estimated Billing Methods which consumers have opposed over the years.
Data from the industry shows that more than half of the total 10 million registered electricity consumers are without meters.
The Order issued by NERC pegged payment for electricity bills paid by the R2 and C1 according to estimated power supply hours in their locations until the DisCos provide their homes with meters.
