The Nasarawa State Police Command, has debunked alleged inhuman treatment and extortion by some men and officers of its against the public.
The alleged extortion by the police was published in one of the national dailies (not Expressday), few days ago.
In a statement signed by the Nasarawa State Command Spokesman, Nansel Ramhan (ASP), the police described the report as unprofessional, fallacious, ill-motivated, mischievous and baseless.
According to the statement, the said report stated that personnel of the New Karu Police station were taking advantage of the 24-hour curfew imposed on Karu Local Government to dehumanize and extort residents of the area.
Also, the writer of the report alleged that he was arrested together with three other persons at a relaxation spot and that the police collected N100,000 each from them before they regained their freedom.
The Nasarawa Police Command noted that even though it is open to criticism and will not in any way hinder members of the public from expressing their grievances on any issue, it will, however, not be intimidated and will remain committed to protecting lives and property of residents of the state.
“The Command’s position is based on the outcome of an investigation conducted to ascertain the veracity of the accusation which authoritatively revealed that the writer was arrested on April 17, 2020, at about 9:45pm while engaged in a drinking speer at a beer parlour.
“The action is in defiance to the state government’s proclamation, which ordered a 24- hour curfew in Karu in order to contain the spread of Covid-19.”
