Intent on beating the deadline set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for political parties to submit names of their candidates for the 2023 general elections, the Labour Party (LP) on Friday named politician, Dr. Doyin Okupe, as its Vice-Presidential candidate.
Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has already emerged as the party’s presidential candidate.
Explaining the circumstances that threw him up, Okupe said he would be holding the position in trust for the rightful owner, to be announced later.
He stressed that the party took this route to beat the Friday, June 17, 2022 deadline set by INEC for the submission of names of candidates.
He added that LP remained open to formation of a alliances of political forces to challenge the major parties – All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) – in the 2023 presidential election.
Meanwhile, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Bola Tinubu has similarly named Kabiru Masari as his running mate for the 2023 elections.
A chieftain of the party Kabiru Faskari said this during an interview on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ on Friday.
