The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday announced Saturday, November 8, 2025 as the date for the next Anambra State Governorship Election.
INEC National Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, revealed this during a meeting with all the political parties in Nigeria at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
The meeting which was convened to discuss crucial matters in the forthcoming Ondo state governorship election, was attended by the leadership of various political parties including the big three, All Progressive Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP).
The Anambra election is expected to attract significant attention, given the state’s political dynamics and the influence of the result on the broader political landscape in Nigeria. As the election date approaches, parties and candidates are expected to intensify their campaigns, with the focus shifting to grassroots mobilization and voter outreach.
This announcement marks the beginning of the countdown to one of Nigeria’s most anticipated elections in the Southeast, as Anambra prepares to elect its next governor or continue with the incumbent, Professor Chukwuma Soludo.
Mahmood also emphasized to them the importance of the upcoming election in Ondo, noting that the INEC is fully committed to ensuring a free, fair, and credible process, and outlined measures being taken by the Commission to ensure this.
The INEC boss also reiterated the need for political parties to conduct themselves responsibly, urging all candidates and their supporters to prioritize peaceful campaigns. He reminded the parties of INEC’s guidelines and the critical role that adherence to these rules plays in fostering a credible electoral environment.
“The Anambra Governorship election is a vital part of our democratic process, and INEC is ready to deliver an election that reflects the will of the people. We urge political parties and all stakeholders to work with us to ensure a peaceful and orderly election”, he stated.
Mahmood further charged political parties to start their preparations in earnest, while INEC reassured the public that all necessary logistics, including voter registration updates, would be completed well ahead of the scheduled date.
