A 15-year old girl (name withheld) in Kokori town, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State has abandoned her baby in the bush after shortly after delivery.
When arrested by men of the Nigeria Police, Isiokolo Division, she said the reason for the abandonment of the baby was her inability to get money to care for the child.
She added that she abandoned the child in order for a good Samaritan to take care of the child since she didn’t have money.
She told journalists at the Isiokolo Police Station that: “l gave birth to this child this morning at about 5am, nobody helped me to deliver the child.
“When I was about to deliver, I felt something running round my stomach of which l didn’t understand, and l squatted. Before l knew it, the child was already on the ground crying and l quickly cover her with clothe and took her to a nearby bush where l left her for any good Samaritan to take care because I don’t have money to take care of her.
“I did not know the father of the child. I want good members of the society to help me take care of the baby”.
The lady who chanced upon the abandoned child but did not want her name mentioned, explained to journalists that “at about 6am on Wednesday 17, June 2020, I heard the cry of a baby in a nearby bush which at first I thought was an animal but on a closer look, I found out that it was a newly born baby crying.
“I took the child to members of the Community Vigilante group before I was advised to take her to Isiokolo Police station, which I did”.
According to the lady, the vigilante group and the Nigeria Police immediately swung into action in search of the mother and she was eventually arrested.
The Chairman of Ethiope East Local Government Council, Chief Faith Majemite, immediately ordered for the child to be taken care of in the meantime by footing the bills at the Primary Health Care Center, Kokori.
