FIRS pledges judicious funding of student loans scheme

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the Nigeria Students Loans Fund have assured the public of the judicious use of the education tax fund collected by the Service for the success of the recently introduced students loan scheme.

Chairman of FIRS, Zack Adedeji, gave the assurance alongside the Executive Secretary of the Loans Fund, Adetunde Sawyer, when they addressed State House correspondents on Monday shortly after the duo  briefed President Bola Tinubu on the imminent take-off of the scheme.

Adedeji stressed that the education tax remittances over the years from corporate organisations would be deployed to the fund so that indigent students can get some relief in pursuit of their academic ambitions

On his part, Sawyer pointed out that the Fund was established to operationalise the loan scheme towards bridging the gap of brilliant Nigerian youth not acquiring tertiary education because of inadequate funds.

The impact of the scheme would be huge for the beneficiaries and the country at large as higher education would become more accessible to many, while manpower would increase for the national economy across all sectors.

He further assured the public of the transparent process of students getting the loans as it will be based on zero-human interaction.

Application would be done online with essential requirements from the applicant being Joint Admissions and Matriculation (JAMB) number, National Identity Number (NIN), Bimodal  Verification Number (BVN) and Matriculation Number.
