Governor of Edo state Godwin Obaseki has formally joined the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after his disqualification from seeking re-election under the All Progressive Congress (APC).
He made the formal declaration on Friday in Benin City where he obtained his membership card which he displayed to the applause from his supporters.
Governor Obaseki had visited some PDP governors ahead of his declaration for the party.
Earlier in the week, the governor visited President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, to inform him of his resignation from the ruling party.
Obaseki had a running battle with his predecessor and now suspended chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole, leading to the disqualification of the governor from the party’s governorship primary election on the grounds that his academic credentials were suspect.
