The European Union (EU), Head of Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Amb. Gautier Mignot, has restated EU’s commitment to provide support towards strengthening democracy in Nigeria.

Mignot made the pledge during his first official visit to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, headquarters on Tuesday in Abuja.

The EU official, who assumed office just four days ago lauded Nigeria’s 25-year milestone of uninterrupted democratic governance since 1999.

He described democracy as the most effective system for promoting human rights, fundamental freedoms, and societal harmony.

“Democracy is a continuous cycle of progress, requiring nations to address challenges while seizing opportunities,” he stated.

The ambassador emphasized the critical role of robust electoral systems in fostering public trust and ensuring credible democratic processes.

“Nigeria and the European Union share a vision of democracy as the best way to organize societies. Our partnership is built on mutual respect and a shared commitment to overcoming these challenges together,” Mignot said.

According to him, the EU has allocated €90 million to its Democracy Governance Programme, a comprehensive initiative designed to support Nigeria’s electoral processes and governance institutions, including INEC.

He added that beyond financial aid, the EU provides technical expertise, diplomatic engagement, and election observation missions.

Mignot emphasized the EU’s principle of political neutrality, stating, “We are not here to interfere in Nigeria’s internal affairs or favor any political party. Our mission is to support democracy while respecting Nigeria’s sovereignty.”

He further pledged the EU’s unwavering partnership in promoting credible elections and advancing democratic values. “In these challenging times, the EU remains a steadfast ally to Nigeria. Together, we will continue to build on our shared experiences for a brighter democratic future,” he noted.

On his part, INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, expressed gratitude for the EU’s pivotal role in Nigeria’s democratic evolution, particularly since the country’s return to civilian rule in 1999.

Yakubu noted that the EU’s support has been instrumental in enhancing INEC’s capacity and consolidating the electoral process over six electoral cycles.

He however clarified that INEC does not receive direct funding from the EU, instead, EU support is channeled through implementing partners who assist with stakeholder engagement, report publication, and technical services.

He noted that Core electoral activities, such as voter registration and election logistics, remain funded exclusively by the Nigerian government.
