The Delta State Waste Management Board says it is exploring the potentials of using plastic waste as a binding material for asphalt and paving blocks production.
Chairman of the Board, Mr. Chinye Bazim, disclosed this on Friday at the Government House Annexe, Warri in a meeting with the Taskforce Chairman on Environment, Honourable Sylvester Oromoni.
He said the board was in contact with companies that will help the State explore the potentials of using plastic waste as a binding material for asphalts and paving blocks production.
Chinye said that the management of solid waste continues to be a major challenge, particularly in the urban agglomeration so the best way now is to recycle waste.
He said that the way forward to end indiscriminate dumping of refuse around the state is to fully restore the old pattern of door-to-door waste collection and effective enforcement.
“That is why myself and members of the Board, Hon. Mofe Edema and Olorogun Daniel Ighedo are here to synergise with the State Taskforce on Environment”, he stated.
According to Chinye, government will henceforth ensure enforcement of environmental sanitation practices and payment of bills. Effective environmentally sound management of wastes requires active participation of all key stakeholders too.
“Domestic waste management has become an area of major concern. When I came into office, It was like we were losing battle against the harmful consequences of unguarded waste disposal and the attainment of a clean healthy environment here in Delta”, he added.
On his part, State Taskforce Chairman on Environment, Honourable Sylvester Oromoni said that “health hazard, traffic congestion, unsightliness, unpleasantness and blockage of drainage system are some of the problems caused by the lack of efficient waste management practice in Delta and I think this is the right time to join hands together for effectiveness”.
