The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) National Secretariat has called on the Federal Government to immediately shut down all non-essential government activities to curtail the spread of Covid-19 across the country.
In a statement signed by NUJ President, Chris Isiguzo, and National Secretary, Shuaibu Usman Leman, the Union says it believes that doing so has become a matter of priority to avert an impending catastrophe, especially as more cases springing up in Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory.
The statement said that only personnel of essential services like medical services, the Police, armed forces, fire services, telecommunications, the media, banks, selected markets and the power sector should be allowed to operate in the meantime.
“NUJ is equally calling on all Nigerians to adhere strictly to advice from medical institutions and government while state and federal governments should emulate the China, America and European countries, which are taking urgent remedial measures to ensure that the people do not suffer untold hardship”, the statement said.
The body of journalists says this is the time to work together for the collective survival of the country because no one is safe if only one person gets infected.
