Following the partial shutdown of activities in parts of Nasarawa state as part of measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19, some residents have appealed to the Governor, Engineer Abdullahi Sule, to provide immediate support to alleviate their suffering.
The appeal became necessary after four days since government declared 24 hours shutdown in Karu local government area and restricted movement in Lafia, the state capital from 6am to 8 pm.
Our correspondent reports that though movement in the day time was not restricted, markets were however operating at low pace as the prices of food items and other essential commodities have since skyrocketed.
A resident of Lafia who spoke on condition of anonymity said the measures taken against the spread of the Covid-19 are good but also have their negative effects on the people.
“We appreciate government for taking a proactive step, but I am appealing to them to also ensure that the Police, Army and other security agencies are not deployed only to enforced the restriction order.
“There is need for deployment of more security operatives in the state because the roads are open in the night which bandits could take advantage to perpetrate their unholy act,” the source said.
Comrade Dyondun Emmanuel, a student unionist, appealed to government to provide palliative to Nasarawa citizens during this shutdown period.
“We are aware that within this period government has received support from some banks and even from well to do individuals, it will be wise to embark on relieving the people from untold hardship the restriction order had brought,” he said.
However, on his part, the Nasarawa State Commissioner of Information Culture and Tourism, Comrade Dogo Shammah, assured that very soon government will embark on distribution of food items across the state.
He said: “Since government placed a 24 hour curfew at Karu and restricted movement into the state, there has been plan on ground which at the moment food have been procured outside the state for the purpose of distribution to residents of the state.
“I am appealing to all residents of Nasarawa state to be patient and be supportive to government. The good plans of the government will soon reach everyone.”
