Covid-19: Governors write Buhari to modify lockdown

Last Updated: April 25, 2020By

The Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) has written to the Federal Government seeking major adjustments to the lockdown ordered by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The NGF Chairman and Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi in a letter to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation dated 24th April 2020, requested the Federal Government to ease restrictions within the states but maintain a ban on inter-state movements.

Titled: “Covid-19 Protocol-NGF input on the proposed Presidential intervention”, the governors are seeking five modifications on the lockdown put in place to curb the spread of the Coronavirus in the country.

Fayemi stated: “Subject to Mr. President approval, the NGF would want the following incorporated into Mr. President’s pronouncements;

“1. Inter-state lockdown excluding movements of essential supplies – foods, beverages, medical and pharmaceuticals, petroleum supplies and agricultural products

“2. Internal movement but with restrictions on large gatherings and assemblies;

“3. Overnight curfews; 4. Lockdown of flights; and 5. Compulsory use of face masks/coverings in the public”.

The governors’ recommendations if accepted by the Federal Government would be huge relief to residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Lagos and Ogun states which have endured lockdown for about three weeks.

Nigeria’s Covid-19 cases rose to 1,019 on Friday with 32 deaths.
