The Minister of State for Health, Dr. Olorunnimbe Mamora, has raised the alarm that with the increasing cases of COVID-19 as a result of community transmission, facilities for case management in some States of the country may become overwhelmed.
He raised the concern at the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 media briefing in Abuja, Thursday.
Dr. Mamora, however, revealed that considering the relevance of managing cases in facilities, his ministry through the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) has developed a guideline for the establishment of Community Support Centres.
According to him: “A central objective of this guideline is the establishment of Community Support Centres (CSCs) in selected clusters of local government areas for the management of COVID-19 cases.
“These community support centres will strengthen the capacity of the health system at the community level to respond to the outbreak and result in the reduction of the transmission of COVID-19 within communities in high burden and high density states.”
While raising concern over the rising cases of COVID-19 related deaths in the country, the Minister advised Nigerians “especially those who are in doubt to take extra pre-caution in their daily activities.”
He noted that case fatality in Nigeria can be reduced to the barest minimum if non-pharmaceutical interventions were scaled up and “we become more proactive in dealing with positive cases. “
The Minister further disclosed that the National Council for Health (NCH), has approved the Health Sector COVID-19 Pandemic Response Action Plan.
The Plan, according to him, was developed by the Federal Ministry of Health in collaboration with departments and agencies in order to present one response in the health sector delivered in a coordinated and strategic manner.
