The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, says that the on-going Covid-19 pandemic creates opportunity for Nigeria to look inward for the production of commodities it needs.

Onu, who spoke in Abuja on Monday when he received a donation of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) from the China Great Wall Industry Corporation, said effort by the Ministry to support the fight against the pandemic had yielded fruits.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry’s Director, Press and Public Relations, Abdulganiyu Aminu, the Minister stated that agencies like the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) and others have designed and supplied PPEs for use in Nigerian hospitals and other corporate organisations.

“Though the pandemic has adversely affected our economic and social life, it has also created opportunities for us to look in-ward”, the Minister said.

Dr. Onu disclosed that relevant agencies of the Ministry were working strenuously in their research laboratories to find solution to various problems thrown up by the pandemic.

The home-grown solution being developed by the Ministry’s researchers covers all sectors like health, entrepreneurship, education etc, he added.

He thanked the corporation for the donation and assured that Nigeria’s relationship with China will continue to grow, adding that Nigeria will continue to collaborate with China in satellite technology.

Earlier, the representative of China Great Wall Industry Corporation, Ms. Wang Ming said the donation of the PPE’S was to support Nigeria’s fight against the spread of Covid-19.

She expressed hope and optimism that Nigeria will soon overcome the challenges posed by the virus.
