The Director General of the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT), Prof. Usman Malami Aliyu, has disclosed that one of the strategies his Institute is adopting to ensure that women and young girls in the country are prevented from having cervical cancer is the Annual Cervical Cancer Screening Campaign.
This, according to him, is an avenue for women and girls to undergo cervical cancer screening in different parts of the country in order to nip in the bud any trace of cancer.
Prof. Malami stated this when the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Sydani Group, Mr. Sidney Sampson, led a delegation to pay a courtesy on him in his office in Abuja, on Tuesday.
He said that the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination currently going on in different parts of the country is aimed at vaccinating eligible young girls from the age of 9 -14 in Nigeria, hence, prevent them from being affected by the disease..
He explained that NICRAT being an agency under the Federal Ministry of Health was established to treat and prevent cancer through massive awareness creation and conduct research across all cancer-related areas.
Prof. Malami expressed confidence in Sydani’s competence and reiterated NICRAT’s willingness to collaborate with a possible Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to guide the relationship.
Speaking earlier, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Sydani Group, Mr. Sidney Sampson, indicated the interest of his organization to partner with the NICRAT in supporting its mandate, especially in meeting the Human Papiloma Virus (HPV) vaccination coverage target and elimination of cervical cancer in Nigeria by 2030.
Some of the key areas of expertise of Sydani Group, he said, include strategy design, data systems optimization, and innovative demand generation.
According to Mr. Sidney, based on NICRAT’s mandate, key areas of potential collaboration include co-creating impactful concepts to drive resource mobilization, leveraging and optimizing existing interventions, collaborating to implement identified opportunities, and providing technical support.
This, he said, will lead to the attainment of the core mandate of NICRAT and support the strengthening of critical areas that have been prioritized for urgent action. He further noted that his team will come back to further discuss specific areas of support to NICRAT, especially, in areas of research.
