Benue State is not just thinking of what to do, but well prepared for potential floods, as neighbourong Cameroon releases water from its Lagdo dam, says the State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia.
He gave the assurance in a chat with State House correspondents shortly after he met with President Bola Tinubu, at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja on Thursday.
Emphasizing the state’s proactive stance on potential flooding, which is a recurring issue there, Alia said that rather than merely contemplating actions, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) is fully equipped to handle any flood-related challenges.
The governor also mentioned ongoing discussions about dredging the river and exploring various options before seeking federal government support.
According to him, “we are not thinking of what to do when the floods come, we are prepared, we are creating awareness to all our people. I had also said the River (Benue) requires dredging,
“So before the dredging there is a number of things on the table – exploring to see which of the best options, before the Federal Government comes in to support us.
“So, we’re not just waiting; we have a ‘SEMA’, an emergency management team with the capacity to take charge of all these and they are already quite armed. We pray that the flood doesn’t come in but if it does, we are definitely equal to the task.
