Mohammed Adamu Obomeghie is a Lecturer in the department of Statistics and elected Deputy Rector, Academics of the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State. As one of the dependable lieutenants of the Rector, he responds expeditiously to matters within his purview in accordance with shared vision of the administration of Dr Salisu Shehu Umar. He proved to be an interviewer’s delight during a chat with Balarabe Oshiafi. Excerpts:

  • Shortfall in Academic Staff

When this new Rector, Dr. Salisu Shehu Umar came about a year ago, the was a terrible short fall in academic staff. It was a problem he inherited. He quickly went into action. He organised interviews for qualified non academic staff in the system but who for one reason or the other, were denied conversion by the previous administration. Such affected staff have been converted into academic staff and this is a huge boost to Lecturing and staff strength of this Institution. Added to this, we engage in training and retraining of Academic Staff. We have also not closed our sensibilities to looking out for qualified lecturers outside.

  • Rating by National Board for Technical Education (NBTE)

When the National Board for Technical Education visited recently and did their assessment, they rated us very highly. Of course, in life, when you know what you are doing, even as an individual, you can rate yourself.

  • About Internally Generated Revenue (IGR)

If we cannot generate revenue, we are not an Institution. The administration of Dr. Salisu Shehu Umar has really given a boost to our IGR. Our agricultural revolution is very profitable. We have bakery. We have a new scheme that gives a percentage to any Lecturer or Student who brings an idea that is profitable. There is the laundry and car wash ventures. Government funding is never enough, so we are always thinking of new ways of boosting our IGR.

Basically when you have the right personnel, and the attitude, the envisaged academic culture is instilled in students. So we encourage them to bring up productive initiatives instead of engaging in ‘Yahoo Yahoo’.
