Despite the Nasarawa State government’s efforts to repatriate the Almajiris from the State, hundreds of them are still roaming around some streets in Keffi Local Government Area.
The frightening report as gathered from a resident of Keffi was that one among the boys has a travel history that has generated suspicion that he might be a spy to a yet to be identified criminal syndicate.
One of the Almajiris who gave his name as Amadu from Kaduna State, revealed that he and others reside in Angwan Mayanka community in Keffi.
He, however, refused to disclose the name of their teacher (Mallam). When questioned further, he said that they were not aware that government had taken a stand on returning them to their various home States.
It would be recalled that the Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, in compliance with the 19 northern state governors’ decision to repatriate all almajiris to their various states and reunite them with their parents, in March flagged off the repatriation exercise in Lafia, the state capital.
Since then, the large numbers of the almajiris in major roads of Lafia has reduced drastically as against the previous times where these category of children in their thousands roam the town.
However, Keffi’s case seems to be different, as many of the almajiris are still being spotted near the local government secretariat, expectedly that the council chairman shouldn’t allowed.
ExpressDay made several attempts to speak with the Chairman, Keffi Local Government Area, Alhaji Sani Maigoro, but did not abortive, as he could not respond to calls or the text message sent to him requesting his reaction to the development.
