Senator Godswill Akpabio from Akwa Ibom State has been elected by majority of his colleagues as the Senate President of the 10th National Assembly.
Akpabio, a former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, and a former governor of Zamfara State, Senator Abdulaziz Yari, were the two nominated for the senate president position.
Akpabio garnered 63 votes to defeat his rival, Yari, who polled 46 votes.
Senator Akpabio is the preferred candidate of the leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
